Wisconsin CFS Association Issues Position Paper on Name Change (excerpted from the Fall 1998 issue of theWI - CFS Association "Lifeline" newsletter) The Wisconsin Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Association recognizes the absolute necessity for a name change that more appropriately reflects the complex and disabling nature of an illness trivialized by the current label of "chronic fatigue syndrome." Over the past ten years, the associations board of directors has discussed this issue, and we have responded to national and international inquiries about a name change. We acknowledge the tremendous increase in scientific research which has enlightened many in regard to the complexities of this illness. However, it appears that because of these complexities, our preference for a name change that corresponds to an etiology is not a realistic expectation for the near future. Therefore, as a state patient advocacy group, the Wisconsin Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Association supports changing the name of this illness to an eponym. The board of directors opinion is that the unification of all advocacy groups in this effort may bring about much-needed solidarity which would allow us to move forward together. We commend those associations and individuals who are currently working on this issue, and we ask that they represent our position to the public.
